Access to some tourist attractions is considered challenging for those who are not “hardcore” adventurers. However, even for those simply seeking rest amidst nature, there are fully equipped locations for tranquil days.

If you’re looking for things to do in Chapada dos Veadeiros to reconnect with yourself, you’ll find accommodations nestled in forests with excellent amenities, including meals and nighttime events. These places also offer short trails and easy access to breathtaking waterfalls and rivers—all in one location, far from the hustle and bustle of city centers.

Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park

The National Park is located in northeastern Goiás, spanning the municipalities of São João d’Aliança, Teresina de Goiás, Nova Roma, Alto Paraíso, Cavalcante, and Vila São Jorge. Established in 1961, it protects 240,611 hectares of high-altitude cerrado. In 2001, UNESCO recognized it as a World Natural Heritage site.

The park protects and preserves a variety of unique species and plants, hundreds of springs, prehistoric rocks, and areas that tell the region’s history, such as old mines and quilombos. It is a cultural gem that showcases natural beauty amidst the cerrado.

The park’s primary goal is to protect its fauna and flora, preserving the biodiversity of the region. Additionally, it promotes scientific research, environmental education, and public visitation, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the best of nature, including waterfalls, trails, and other adventures within the cerrado universe.

How to Get to Chapada dos Veadeiros?

The nearest airport is Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport in Brasília, about 250 km from Alto Paraíso, one of the park’s central cities. Another option is Goiânia Airport, which is 450 km away.

The journey by land is made via high-quality paved roads, providing a comfortable and quick trip. From Brasília, the average travel time is 3.5 hours; from Goiânia, it takes 6 hours.

The main towns are Alto Paraíso, Cavalcante, and Vila São Jorge. Your choice of base city won’t affect the route, as it must be completed by land. Renting a car is a great option for complete freedom and to enjoy the view along the road cutting through the cerrado.

Alternatively, you can take a bus that operates daily, but make sure to check schedules and drop-off points. Ridesharing is also available through Facebook groups. If you’re traveling solo and want to manage your time, renting a car and offering rides in such groups might be a good solution.

The base city of Alto Paraíso is 37 km from São Jorge along the GO-239. The road to the village is paved and in excellent condition.

From Alto Paraíso to Cavalcante, it’s 85 km along the GO-118, plus an additional 20 km to the beautiful Cavalcante. Despite average pavement quality on this stretch, it’s worth the trip, as Cavalcante boasts some of the region’s most stunning waterfalls.

Now that we’ve explored the diversity of waterfalls, trails, and canyons in the National Park, it’s important to know the best places to visit in Chapada dos Veadeiros. These attractions are divided among the three main towns:

Alto Paraíso

Alto Paraíso is busier. The town offers a wider range of accommodations, dining options, and shopping, attracting many tourists seeking comfort. For those wanting a central base to explore the park, Alto Paraíso is ideal as it connects to both Vila São Jorge and Cavalcante, enabling day trips to the attractions in these areas.

On the road leading to Vila São Jorge, there are numerous traditional and modern inns, including individual chalets. It’s an excellent choice for those seeking total tranquility with privacy and comfort.

On Fazenda São Bento, there’s a complete inn near stunning waterfalls. Among the most visited are Almécegas I and II, located on the property. The lodging, dining, and ecotourism structure is outstanding, offering everything in one place.

Another interesting spot is São Bento Waterfall, offering a cozy environment to spend the day and enjoy a picnic. The waterfalls are open to visitors for a fee of R$80.00 per person if you’re not staying at the inn.

You can bring food and drinks, so consider preparing a small cooler with snacks and beverages to make the most of the area’s three waterfalls. The trails are well-marked, allowing for self-guided exploration.

Other Attractions

Other highlights include Cristais Waterfall, Catarata dos Couros, Macaquinhos Waterfalls, Sertão Zen Waterfall, Anjos and Arcanjos Waterfalls, Loquinhas Waterfall, and Veredas Waterfall, each boasting unique and breathtaking natural beauty.

In 2021, when I visited Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, I remember the overwhelming sensation of witnessing the extraordinary beauty of every corner of that place. It was an experience of profound gratitude. I thought to myself:

Unbelievable! How small I am in the face of nature’s grandeur, and how insignificant everything would be without it.

My husband and I stayed for two days in a chalet along the highway, 10 km from Alto Paraíso and just 2 km from the Almécegas I and II waterfalls.

Each chalet was about 50 meters apart, ensuring total privacy. It was wonderful to be secluded in nature but with the comfort of good hospitality, evening events, and even a private stream on the property. It was an incredible experience!

What to Do in Chapada dos Veadeiros: Cavalcante

As one of the most distant base towns in the National Park, Cavalcante is often overlooked by tourists. However, its unique beauty compensates for the extra road travel.

While the town’s infrastructure is smaller compared to Alto Paraíso and Vila São Jorge, this hidden gem stands out with breathtaking natural landscapes and spectacular waterfalls.

One of Brazil’s most beautiful waterfalls, Santa Bárbara Waterfall, is located in Cavalcante—a true wonder hidden in the vastness of the cerrado. Its bright blue water creates a stunning visual spectacle, making visitors feel like they’re in the Caribbean. Its striking beauty, featuring a large natural pool, has drawn greater recognition to the town, attracting more tourists each year.

Besides Santa Bárbara, Cavalcante offers numerous other attractions. Nearby, you’ll find Candaru Waterfall, Capivara Waterfall, Complexo da Prata Waterfalls, Ponte das Pedras, Vale das Araras, Nova Aurora Viewpoint (Cachoeira da Ave Maria), Santana Waterfall, São Félix Waterfall or São Félix Beach, Veredas Waterfall, Poço Encantado, São Bartolomeu Waterfall, Saltos Trail, and Quilombo Kalunga.

It’s recommended to reserve three to four days to visit the main waterfalls, swim in their crystal-clear waters, and immerse yourself in the rich local culture.

Cavalcante is perfect for those seeking total tranquility. The town is peaceful, with limited accommodation and dining options, but the available lodgings are excellent. Many are nestled in nature, with options like treehouses, floating chalets, and accommodations designed for people with special needs.

These lodgings are ideal for couples or groups and often include fully equipped kitchens, leisure areas, and natural pools. It’s the perfect spot to relax, enjoy peace, and spend days without needing to head into town unless you choose to.

Vila São Jorge: What to Do in This Mini Paradise?

One of the must-visit stops in Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park is Vila São Jorge. This small village retains a rustic charm reflecting its culture, attracting tourists who love nature. While the road connecting Alto Paraíso to the village is paved, the village streets remain dirt roads, preserving its unique character.

The entrance to the National Park is located near the village, providing access to trails such as the Canyons Trail, Carioca Waterfall, Saltos Trail, Seven Falls Trail, and the recently opened Carousel Trail. Besides the park, other attractions include Segredo Waterfall, Abismo Waterfall, Raizama Waterfall, Janela Viewpoint Trail, natural thermal pools, and Vale da Lua.

Exploring the charming Vila São Jorge is a quick activity. You can easily stroll through its artisan shops and restaurants, completing a full village tour in just a few hours. It’s also possible to do day trips between São Jorge and Alto Paraíso, experiencing both in one visit.

Along this route, you’ll find Jardim de Maytrea and Morro da Baleia, uniquely beautiful attractions located along the GO-239. The open landscape of the cerrado, with its buritis, chuveirinhos (native plants), and mountains, reveals the vastness of this paradise called Chapada dos Veadeiros.

Car lines often form at these locations to watch the sunset, making them iconic postcards of the National Park.

If you choose to stay in Vila São Jorge, remember that the village lacks a gas station and ATMs. It’s advisable to fill your tank before arriving and carry some cash. The local pharmacy is small, so bringing essential and daily-use medicines is a good idea.

What to Bring on Your Trip

First and foremost, sunscreen for face and body is essential, even during cold or rainy seasons, as the sun shines most of the time. Your packing list should include swimwear, hats, UV-protective shirts, and sturdy footwear.

Lightweight clothing, such as long-sleeve shirts and leggings, are practical for sun and mosquito protection. For relaxing at your lodging or exploring the town, shorts and T-shirts are ideal.

To enjoy nightlife activities like bars and live music, consider packing dresses, skirts, and more stylish tops. If visiting during winter, bring warm coats, pants, and boots, as nighttime temperatures can be quite cold.

Other must-haves include a flashlight for nighttime walks (some areas may be less lit), cash for emergencies (as cell signals can fail in remote regions), and a small backpack for carrying essentials on trails. A raincoat is also recommended due to the region’s unpredictable weather.

When my husband and I visited Alto Paraíso in June to celebrate our anniversary, we encountered cold weather and occasional rain. We brought coats, and despite the daytime warmth and sun, the nighttime chill was remarkable.

Bringing a small cooler is an excellent idea, regardless of your lodging choice. For trips to short-trail waterfalls, you can pack drinks and snacks to make the journey more enjoyable and avoid hunger or thirst.

While some trails have vendors selling water, coconut water, and even food, prices are typically high. If you’re on a budget, planning ahead with a cooler is the best solution.

Where to Eat in Chapada dos Veadeiros?

In Alto Paraíso and Vila São Jorge, you’ll find restaurants offering delicious homemade meals. The local flavors are sure to delight your palate, creating a heartwarming culinary experience.

In Alto Paraíso’s town center, there are several cozy spots for a good meal. In Cavalcante, the dining options are simpler, but excellent meals can still be found.

On trails and at waterfalls, food vendors are rare, so it’s advisable to bring snacks or light meals for emergencies or to fully enjoy your time in nature.

Free Activities in Chapada dos Veadeiros

In Alto Paraíso and Vila São Jorge, walking through the town centers and exploring artisan shops is a relaxing and enjoyable activity. The Farmer’s Market is another great opportunity to experience local culture.

Watching the sunset at Jardim de Maytrea and Morro da Baleia is also free. However, as these spots lack infrastructure, bringing picnic supplies to enjoy the view is ideal.

For those interested in history, Fazenda Bona Espero is a special place. Established in 1957 by a group of Esperanto speakers, the farm initially provided support and education for vulnerable children. Today, it also operates as a lodging facility and hosts seasonal events. Reservations can be made through Booking.

Activities for Children

Loquinhas Waterfalls is a great choice for families with children. With shallow, crystal-clear pools (especially during dry seasons), it’s perfect for those not seeking major adventures.

The small waterfalls, combined with the sight of playful monkeys along the way, make the experience even more enjoyable for kids. The trail is easy, well-marked, and doesn’t require a guide, with an entry fee.

Other family-friendly options include tubing on the Rio das Almas, Poço Encantado, Fazenda São Bento, Cristais Waterfall, and the Volta da Serra Sanctuary. Some of these attractions offer infrastructure such as restaurants, playgrounds, and kiosks, enhancing comfort for families.

Best Time to Visit Chapada dos Veadeiros

Choosing the right time to visit Chapada dos Veadeiros is key to maximizing your trip. In Brazil, summer runs from December to February; autumn, from March to May; winter, from June to August; and spring, from September to November.

During the rainy season, waterfalls often have murky waters, increasing risks. In the dry season, the beauty of the crystal-clear waters is highlighted, offering safer conditions for exploring these natural wonders.

From May to September, the National Park experiences a dry climate with little to no rain. From October to April, heavy rains are frequent.

For ecotourism enthusiasts, the best time to visit is between April and June, when tourist crowds are smaller, the air is more humid, and the vegetation remains lush and green.

Important Notice from the Municipality of Alto Paraíso (GO)

Brazil is an endemic region for Yellow Fever. Therefore, we advise that when planning your trip to Chapada dos Veadeiros, you get vaccinated against Yellow Fever at least 10 (ten) days before traveling.
